I do this with my students and it helps them get going on longer essays by giving them thee feeling they can get some writing done. It is most effective when we write TOGETHER in class for 10 minutes. Also, great to combine this with the shitty first draft writing!

Thanks for your reply! I love that students can see that everyone makes mistakes during invention phase or shitty first drafts!

Your latest wisdom came at just the right time, as we begin classes tomorrow and I could get consumed (okay, sidetracked) by the busy work of it all. But I will not only practice this action leading to motivation, I am going to pass on my new realization to my students, giving you proper credit, of course! I will be teaching a new version of a course for students on academic probation so the topic of motivation will surely come up...almost as much as procrastination, it's ugly sibling.

I love your write for 10 minutes approach. :) I even started a writing support group based on this idea, and it's the major reason why I'm making progress with my PhD.

This is helpful, a lot. I think my issue is that, the source of my slacking stems from a deep sense of… inadequacy. I unfortunately cannot pomodoro my way out of that. I have been looking up and down this app, hoping against hope, that I will come across an article, written by some high achieving, incredibly nervous, very ADHD, reluctant/accidental global south scholar, who wants nothing more than to rest and take a long nap without any expectations from her but can’t. Because they feel undeserving of all they’ve achieved and also in a way responsible to meet unsaid expectations of their abilities… and how that is negatively impacting their work and how they are trying to navigate their way out… shucks….. I must just write on that, don’t I?
