After teaching a small private college for sixteen years, I chose to fold 'em in December 2021. There were wheels within wheels in that decision, but it was brewing for at least five years, and one might say that it really began when my first child was born. I wrote this week about how the academic mindset often sees children as obstacles or barriers to productivity. And writers suffer a similar mindset, often living by the adage that you lose one book for every child you have. https://joshuadolezal.substack.com/p/do-you-really-lose-a-book-for-every?r=16vgt&s=w&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web
Great column. I too wouldn’t want to encourage quitting recklessly but there is also little value in being held hostage by past decisions. You offer an excellent framework for reassessing.
